A Closer Look at Omnidirectional versus Directional Antennas

In the highly technical world of cellphone signal boosters, there are several components that might seem completely unfamiliar to most of us, one of which is an outside antenna that comes in two types, omnidirectional antennas and directional or yagi antennas. What’s the difference between the two?

 

 

Omnidirectional Antennas

 

In essence, an omnidirectional antenna is a device that is capable of transmitting and receiving signals in all horizontal directions. This makes it an ideal choice for applications that require all-around coverage and it’s also a preferred option for users who require consistent transmission in broader areas or those who need to cater to different providers.

 

Some of the biggest advantages of using omni antennas include ease of installation, the ability to boost 3G and 4G signals and the benefit of being able to amplify signals from various carriers in multiple locations.

 

Perhaps the only two downsides of using omnidirectional antennas are that they cover a lesser range as compared to directional antennas and they may have problems with signal due to long cell tower distance.

 

 

Directional Antennas

 

Also known as yagi antennas, directional antennas are generally defined by their capability to focus and transmit a signal in a particular direction.

 

Although omni antennas seem to be a good choice for their all-around coverage, some applications don’t actually need to transmit signals in all directions but the energy only needs to be focused on a particular direction for increased efficiency.

 

Directional antennas just usually cover a radius of 45 to 90 degrees. But because their energy is focused on a single field, they are able to reach wider areas to pull in a signal.

 

Perhaps the biggest advantage of directional antennas includes their power over omni antennas due to the focused energy. This makes them the ideal choice for transmitting signals in rural areas where cell towers have wider distances than those in urban areas.

 

These antennas only need to be pointed to the direction of the right cell tower to maximize their efficiency in transmitting signals.

 

While omnidirectional antennas can accommodate several carriers from different locations, directional antennas can only cater to one carrier at a time. It’s also very important to make sure that these antennas are pointed to the right cell tower to avoid any interference.

 

 

Which is best for you?

 

The decision on whether an omnidirectional antenna or a directional antenna is best for you will depend highly on your needs. For instance, if you require multiple carriers because you run a business, omni antennas might sound like the most logical choice.

 

But if you’re really after efficiency, you should consider investing in several directional antennas and pointing them towards the right cell towers.

 

On the other hand, if you constantly have problems with poor cell signal every time you’re indoors, an omni antenna could solve your problem because of its ability to boost signals from multiple carriers. Make sure to consider your requirements first, so it’s easier to decide which antenna is right for you.
